PIA MÄNNIKKÖ
CONTOUR
18.10-24.11.
The works in the exhibition explore the observation of landscapes and everyday environments, as well as how we perceive the world both broadly and in fine detail. Human figures are transformed into rolling landscapes; visual and auditory impressions and memories weave together into written tapestries; and the undulating layers of everyday textiles are revealed in the sweep of laser beams.
The movements and dimensions of the human body are the starting points for Pia Männikö’s work. She is also inspired by natural and physical phenomena at various scales. Männikö studied sculpture and environmental art at The Glasgow School of Art and the Academy of Fine Arts. Since 2004, her sculptures, installations, videos, and photographs have been exhibited in over 80 exhibitions and art events in Finland and abroad, including at Kiasma, the Nordic Contemporary Gallery in Paris, and the Armory Gallery in Sydney. Männikö’s public works can be found in Gothenburg and Tierp in Sweden, at the Fyr Hospital and Compass Hospital in Turku, as well as in the foyer of the family service center Aallokko in Seinäjoki. Her works are included, among others, in the art collections of Kiasma, the Finnish state, and the South Korean Wooran Foundation.
The exhibition has been supported by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland and the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
