Questions and Answers

(Updated 20.12.2024)

Is it possible to participate in the competition with several proposals, for example as part of several artist groups?

You can participate with multiple proposals either individually or as part of a group, in which case multiple proposals are attached under one application.
Or:
You can participate both individually and as part of a group, or as part of multiple groups, in which case a separate application is made for each applicant/applicant group.

Each group member does not need to make their own application.

Is the art design planed to be on the building wall, glass wall or both?

The placement is described in more detail in section 4 of the competition programme. The art can be on either or both.

Can the glass be replaced with another material or structure?

No.

Can holes or other shapes be made in glass by cutting?

No.

Can I be involved in painting the metal sheets myself?

It is not possible to promise participation before selecting a suplier. It is a good idea to be prepared for the possibility that the work may be realized without the artist’s presence.

Do I need to have ready-made films for patterning the glasses or can the design be done on paper?

The glass patterns will be digitally printed. The final material will be delivered in a digital format to be determined later.

How will the possible digital printing be taken care of? Will the builder take care of it when ordering the glass elements based on the files provided by the artist? The price of the digital printing should of course be included in the budget for the artwork, but will there be other costs related to this glass wall?

Digital printing is agreed upon when ordering and once the supplier has been selected, the implementation is carried out in collaboration with the supplier, architect and artist.
If the artist is unable to deliver the digital printing material in the required format and size, costs may arise from digitizing, converting or other digital processing of the material.

The tone of the steel sheet surface can be defined or a design can be made on it. Are there any standard shades, color charts, that would not increase costs if used? Can the color vary between elements individually and unlimitedly, or is there some kind of color map or something? Will it increase costs if I use any colors? Are the costs then the same as if a design was printed?

The color costs of the background plating will depend on the supplier chosen in time, but on a general level, the basic shades of the RR color chart are probably Standard and other shades/patterns may incur additional costs.

If and when the space between the glass and the wall is illuminated, is there any basic lighting (above, below?) that would be included in the construction project? Will the difference between the special lighting and the basic lighting come from the art budget?

There will be no lighting in the space between the glass and the wall unless the artwork requires it. The lighting costs required by the artwork are part of the art budget.
Regarding general lighting, lighting will be installed on the lower surfaces of the balconies above the artwork, the purpose of which is also to illuminate the sidewalk below. If the section between the glass and the wall is lit, then the lighting in the area must be reviewed again

The purpose of the Competition

The purpose of the competition is to acquire a work of art for a block built in Jokiranta in Porvoo, which will include a hotel and residential buildings in addition to the K-Citymarket store. The artwork will be located on the glass wall (390 m2) and the opaque wall surface behind it (390 m2) on the Porvoo riverbank side of the building.

The objective of the competition is to find an impressive and innovative work of art that takes the dimensions of the location and its surroundings into account for the site. We hope that the design of the work will accommodate changing seasons and weather conditions as well as the ability to view the work both from up close and afar from the other side of the river.

People of different ages and backgrounds living in Porvoo as well as visitors will be able to enjoy the work, meaning that the work must be suitable for a wide variety of viewers. The objective is to achieve a piece of work that is sustainable in terms of a long life cycle and that is easy to maintain. The life cycle of the work should match that of the frame of the building.

The art budget for the work is € 175,000 (VAT 0 %). The art budget must include all the costs of the work. A basic implementation of the glass elements, their acquisition and installation as well as the wall placed behind the glass are part of the construction contract. The aim is to have the work of art implemented following the competition by the end of 2026. A separate agreement will be made for the implementation after the competition is over.

The public can also vote for their favorite

After the competition ends, the jury will select some proposals to be displayed for public voting. A total of 13,000 euros will be awarded as follows: the competition winner will receive 6,000 euros, the second place 3,500 euros, and the third place 2,500 euros. The winner of the public vote will receive 1,000 euros.

The final decision on commissioning the artwork will be made by the City of Porvoo in collaboration with Kesko, which has the right to commission the artwork based on any of the awarded sketches. According to the competition rules, the organizers also have the right not to commission any artwork based on the competition.
